A Gentle Start: Postpartum Morning Tea for Nourishment & Recovery

In the sacred window after giving birth, the body begins a profound process of healing and rebuilding. What we consume during this time matters deeply not only for physical recovery, but also for emotional well-being, milk supply, and energy levels.

That’s why I’ve put together a Postpartum Morning Tea Blend, thoughtfully crafted with nourishing herbs to support the body, uplift the spirit, and offer a warm, grounding ritual to begin your day.

Ingredients:

  • Raspberry Leaf

  • Alfalfa

  • Oat Straw

  • Nettle Leaf

  • Green Rooibos Tea

Let’s explore why these herbs are so powerful during postpartum.

🍃 Raspberry Leaf

Often referred to as “the woman’s herb,” raspberry leaf is rich in fragrine, a compound that tones the uterus and supports its return to pre-pregnancy size. It’s also high in iron, calcium, and magnesium, which are essential during the postpartum period.

Raspberry leaf has traditionally been used to ease menstrual discomfort and support reproductive health. Some research also suggests it may reduce postpartum bleeding due to its uterine-toning effects (Simpson et al., 2001, Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health).

🌱 Alfalfa

Alfalfa is a nutrient powerhouse, packed with vitamin K (essential for blood clotting), protein, folate, and chlorophyll. It’s also considered a galactagogue, helping to support milk production in breastfeeding parents.

Studies show that alfalfa may promote lactation, though more research is needed. It’s traditionally included in many cultures’ postpartum diets for its rebuilding and revitalizing properties.

🌾 Oat Straw

Oat straw is incredibly calming to the nervous system and rich in B vitamins, calcium, and magnesium. It supports mood, sleep, and nervous system regulation which is ideal for parents adjusting to life with a newborn.

Research highlights oat extract's positive effects on stress reduction and cognitive performance (Kennedy et al., 2010, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine), making oat straw a gentle ally for emotional balance during postpartum.

🌿 Nettle Leaf

Nettle is one of the most mineral-rich herbs available. It provides iron, vitamin C, potassium, and chlorophyll all of which support energy levels, tissue repair, and milk supply.

Studies have confirmed nettle’s high iron content and ability to combat anemia, a common concern postpartum (Upton, 2013, American Herbal Pharmacopoeia). It also acts as a gentle diuretic, helping the body release excess fluids.

🍵 Green Rooibos

Unlike traditional green tea, green rooibos is caffeine-free and packed with antioxidants specifically aspalathin, which may help regulate blood sugar and support adrenal function. This makes it a great choice for morning energy without the crash.

Green rooibos has been studied for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits (Joubert et al., 2008, Journal of Ethnopharmacology), making it a beautiful base for daily vitality and gentle detoxification.

🫖 A Daily Ritual of Care

Sipping this tea in the quiet moments of early motherhood isn’t just about what’s in your cup it’s about how you care for yourself. Warmth, nourishment, and herbal support are ancient tools we can return to again and again.
